The Challenge:
With no existing interactive water features, the Pendle Leisure Trust looked to create a highly engaging and inclusive water play area for children of all ages and abilities in their community.
Our Solution
We designed and installed a comprehensive, multi-level interactive water play system to increase water confidence and provide hours of play. This new area incorporated a variety of jets, tipping buckets, handwheels, water channels, slides, and sensory panels to create memorable moments for the families of Pendle.
Key features included:
- Interactive waterball – houses a manifold and control system accessed via a removable panel for easy maintenance. Equipped with multiple buckets, handwheels and jets to engage children for longer periods of time.
- Span pipe – complete with tipping buckets and a large waterwheel, providing overhead splashes to those below
- Interactive arms – water jets out of pipefalls and shark shower arms, creating streams of water on to children below, while bright colours and characters create great visual impact and sensory stimulation
- Tipping bucket and splash board – the bucket is gradually filled via a water jet until a critical level is reached, forcing the bucket to tip and pour litres of water into the pool. Children experience the excitement of the large splash, while developing problem solving skills by calculating when they will next be soaked
- Fish squirts and octopus squirts – these squirts complete various features, spraying and showering water onto young ones. Their bright colours and shapes instigate imaginative play, while creating an exciting underwater theme
- Toddler slide – featuring a colourful design, with tactile surfaces composed of moving elements and mirrors, toddler slides offer sensory play while introducing young ones to water
- Interactive wall panel – lining the plunge pool, this features a series of moving parts and mirrors to provide plenty of stimulation, while encouraging turn-taking and motor skills.
The design combined bright colours, playful shapes, and multi-sensory elements to engage children’s imaginations while promoting active water exploration.
The Result
The project successfully transformed a standard pool into a vibrant, interactive water playground. Families with children of all ages now have a safe and stimulating environment to learn, play, and build confidence in water.
Project Feedback
Paul Whittaker, Business Development Manager - Pendle Leisure Trust:
“Our new children’s water feature at Pendle Wavelengths, funded through the Nelson Town Deal, has been a fantastic addition to the facility. Hippo Leisure were excellent to work with throughout the design and implementation process, providing expert guidance and delivering a high-quality installation. The transformation has significantly enhanced the customer experience, and we’ve seen a 22% increase in casual swimming in January 2026 compared to January 2025 – a clear reflection of its positive impact.”
